If you're a McCartney fan, buy it. Although it seems to have become a favorite of mine, I would not have thought so following the very first run-through: I'm a huge, nostalgic Beatles fan. I'm not a Beatles Know-It-All, Collect Every Album Maniac, I just can be brought right back to various stages of my life depending on the Beatles song playing. They came to the US the year I was born. I grew up with them, and the era of Wings, and each on their own individually. I, like so many others, was shocked and saddened by the untimely death of John Lennon. I too was hoping for that one day reunion that probably would not have happened even had he lived as they were so adamantly against having one. I also was a bit of a Wings fan. But, all in all, I guess I just really like Paul McCartney and I always have. This is an eclectic arrangement. I can hear sounds so reminiscent of the Beatles as well as Wings on this CD. I think if you're more of a Paul McCartney fan in general, you will like it. One of the guys I work with is a MAJOR Beatles fan (he's an Italian raised in Argentina who came here as an adult). He even loves and goes to see Beatles tribute bands (Beatlemania, Abbey Road), etc. I have a picture of Paul on my wall at work (you get a nice little photo of him with this CD). Alberto (the guy at work) got all excited when he saw it and learned that I had the new CD. I let him take it home. He brought it back the next day, laid it on my desk, and walked away - he did not say a THING! I said "Wait a minute! Did you burn it?" He said "You-a mean you-a wanted-a me to copy it or-a maybe I think I should have-a lighted it on fire" - he HATED it!!!! Anyway, I was leary of it upon first play. But I found myself going back to it again and again. Next thing I knew, it had grown on me. And now I even have favorite songs on it. There are actually not very many that I don't like in some way. Some of the lyrics are wacked, but either the beat is good on those songs, or the melody, or the instruments used, etc. There's a slow song called "You Tell Me" and Paul's voice is not at it's best, almost whiney. But there's a really nice guitar rift in it and I like the music and his voice softens in spots so it grew on me anyway. One song I really like is called "That Was Me" and the lyrics are just nuts, but the bass in it is great and it's wicked catch-y. My favorite song is "See Your Sunshine" which is a sweet little love song and he sings my favorite line: "Step out in front of me baby, they want you in the front line. They want to see your sunshine." It's just great - he admires this woman so much he's glad to let her take the spotlight. Oh, I AM just a hopeless romantic. |
